Tarot reading: how cards, questions and spreads work

Tarot is a deck-based symbolic reading practice. A standard modern tarot deck contains 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. Readers combine a card's imagery and traditional associations with its position in a spread and the question being explored.

Major and Minor Arcana

Major Arcana cards are often used for broad turning points, archetypal themes or significant lessons. Minor Arcana cards are divided into four suits and are often read in relation to everyday actions, emotions, decisions and material circumstances.

No card has only one fixed meaning. Context, surrounding cards and the question change which part of a card's symbolism becomes most relevant.

A useful question is better than a dramatic question

Questions that invite perspective usually produce more useful readings than questions demanding certainty. Instead of asking whether one exact event must happen, try asking what you may be overlooking, what tension is shaping the situation, or what approach deserves attention.

This keeps the reading connected to choices you can actually consider rather than turning the cards into a claim of guaranteed prediction.

Reading a three-card spread

A three-card spread gives each card a role. The positions might represent situation, tension and direction, or another clearly stated structure. Read each card in its position first, then look at how the three cards change the story when considered together.

Repeated suits, strong contrasts and a sequence from one kind of energy to another can be more informative than isolating a single dramatic card.

Reversed cards and interpretation

Some traditions read reversed cards as blocked, internalized or altered expressions of the upright theme; others do not use reversals at all. Neither choice makes a reading automatically more accurate.

DestinyU should make the chosen method visible so that the interpretation can be understood rather than appearing as an unexplained verdict.

Tarot is not a guarantee

Tarot cannot verify facts about another person's private thoughts or guarantee future events. It is best used as a structured prompt for reflection, imagination and conversation with yourself.

If a situation has serious medical, legal, financial or safety consequences, rely on direct evidence and qualified professional help rather than a card reading.
